REWRITING WHAT BRAVERY LOOKS LIKE for

VALOUR

BRIEF

VALOUR is a student-driven magazine, curated by the Media Club at SP Jain School of Global Management in Dubai and Sydney. I worked as their Editor-In-Chief where I oversaw editorial strategies, ensured content quality, and led a team of 15 creatives to amplify VALOUR's voice. On top of that, I also served as a graphic/layout artist, photographer, handling everything from writing and proofreading to creating visuals and layouts.

COMPLEMENTARY

VALOUR: COMPLEMENTARY issue

“The union of opposites,” once wrote Austrian novelist Stefan Zweig, “in so far as they are really complementary, always results in the most perfect harmony; and the seemingly incongruous is often the most natural.”

My first introduction to the word “complementary” was during my first grade art class when we were taught the color wheel. Basically, complementary colors are the opposite hues on the wheel. The opposite of red is green, yellow is purple, and blue is orange. Artists use these colors side by side to make each other pop as it creates a simultaneous contrast, allowing us to interpret the color somehow differently, the oranges/reds brighter while the blues/purples darker, than when it is without the other.

It is an interesting perspective on how we think of the countless opposites we encounter — the constant battle of good versus evil, our idea of happiness versus our actual sadness, our future hopes versus our immediate frustrations. As if Zweig and art are telling us that all these things, rather than seeing them as conflicting, are actually enhancing, in some strange harmony, each other’s qualities.

We will never be able to look back at the good old days warmly without the cold of the absence present brings, nor will we ever celebrate our victories without the blood, sweat, and tears that brought us here.

The inherent need to be good and okay is not all there is to us, else we are no different than a manufactured robot. To be human is to persistently live with opposites; the order and the chaos — that is the only way will we ever know beauty.

TIME CAPSULE

See me in the LIBRARY?

VALOUR: NOVEMBER issue

It’s funny how different we see or feel for the same things over time. Like hearing a song you love and suddenly, curse it for unearthing unwanted feelings. Before you used to hate naps in the afternoon, but now, you crave nothing more than a decent sleep. This happens because somehow we just become “another” person through time. And the only time we recognise that we have become different and feel the gravity of the changes around is when we look back or forward.

Just like the matryoshka dolls or Shrek’s onion, we are made up of layers. Through time, the changes, whether by choice or not, demand us to put on another role, another layer. Gradually, the self becomes an amalgamation of personas. This is not an entirely bad or good thing, just how all things are. And in the process of constantly becoming, we sometimes feel “lost.” However dissonant these personas may seem, maybe we must not disregard the delicate connections and similarities between them. The fact is we live in the same person -- we are our own time capsule.

Sometimes, the changes don’t drive us to fashion another layer for ourselves but it amplifies our core. Sometimes, it simply allows us to shed off these coats in order to have a chance to return to ourselves and maybe, finally realise that when people tell you to “go find yourself,” it meant to just honestly be. So no matter what changes molded you, or are going through or have to endure, allow yourself grace. Because after all this time, you are still here. And all you have to be then, now, and later is you.
